Formation of ketone bodies during
starvation:
- During starvation, carbohydrate intake will be low and the
ketone bodies are released by the liver into blood during
starvation.
- Acetyl CoA generated by the oxidation of fatty acids in the
liver, helps in synthesizing ketone bodies. During that oxidation,
some of the important fatty acids mobilized from the adipose
tissue, is are to the ketone bodies for the metabolism of
brain.
- These ketone bodies are mainly produced in the mitochondria of
liver cells.
- So, the metabolization of ketone bodies helped diminished the
use of glucose during starvation and the brain can obtain its
energy requirements from the ketone bodies, which are formed from
fatty acids.
In this way, ketone bodies are formed during starvation.
