1. The ketone bodies made by ketogenesis are ketones (functional group), true or false?
*This is a note from me, the student: the products of ketogenesis, ketone bodies are: 1) 3-Hydroxybutyrate (does not have a ketone functional group) and is a byproduct of 2) acetoacetate (has a ketone functional group). So, based on this, is the question true or false? This a biochem assignment. Thank you in advance
True
The ketone bodies made through ketogenesis are ketones which means they have ketone as a functional group . The three main ketone bodies are : beta hydroxybutyrate, acetoacetate and acetone. Among these only 2 have ketone group , hydroxybutyrate doesn't have ketone group but it is the main ketone body which circulates in blood and goes into liver and provides fuel.
Acetoacetate - by this acetone and hydroxybutyrate are produced . As acetoacetate has 1 ketone group which goes and form acetone and the rest form hydroxybutyrate.
