State the tissues in which ketone bodies are formed.
In which tissues are ketone bodies used?
In which tissues are ketone bodies NOT used. Why is this so?
1. Ketone bodies are formed in liver cells during fasting when availability of glucose is less during gluconeogenesis i.e. formation of glucose by fatty acids deposit in the body. They are acetoacetate, beta hydroxybutyrate and acetone. They are water soluble and contains ketone group in it.
2. Ketone bodies are used in heart and brain tissues as fuel. On oxidation, ketone bodies give ATP and GTP as fuel.
3. Ketone bodies are not used in liver cells because liver doesn't have enzyme Beta ketoacyl transferase so no breakdown of ketone bodies take place to produce further energy.
