Ketogenesis

The process of formation of ketone bodies is known as ketogenesis.

Acetoacetate, ?-Hydroxy butyrate and Acetone are ketone bodies.

Two acetyl CoA fuse by thiolase to form acetoacetyl CoA. This acetoacetyl CoA is converted to ?-Hydroxy?-Methyl Glutaryl CoA (HMG CoA) with HMG CoA synthase. ?-Hydroxy?-Methyl Glutaryl CoA (HMG CoA) in coverted to Acetoacetate by HMG CoA Lyase.

Brain cannot use fat as energy source because of blood brain barrier.

Fat metabolism occurs in mitochondria and red blood cells does not have mitochondria.
