Homework Answers

Answer #1

Non -verbal communication means the behavior and all the elements contained in the speech apart from the oral words (verbal communication). Non-verbal communication through behavior includes gestures, facial expressions, eye movements and contact, attire, appearance, etc. The elements of speech in a non-verbal communication include speed, tone, pitch (high-low), command in the voice such as low and high, etc.

The differences between men and women in non-verbal communication play a critical role in its analysis. Men and women have different non-verbal communication behavior because of their natural tendency to behave due to their gender differences.

Approach to communication

The major reason that makes non-verbal communication different for men and women is because their reason for communication differs due to their gender differences. Men usually communicate to share general information and solve problems. However, women usually communicate to express their emotional feelings. This difference in approach for communication makes women to use more of non-verbal communication.

Interpretation

Studies on non-verbal communication behavior have observed that women are adept at interpreting non-verbal signals; they also better understand non-verbal messages that are sent unintentionally such as deception. Though men send non-verbal signals, they are less subtle than women.

Gestures -

Men use more obvious gestures while women use less subtle gestures in the public. For example, men show a positive gesture when confronted with a girl. However, women show either restrained gesture or exhibit a gesture of aversion when suddenly confronted with a man.

Facial Expressions

Women use more facial expressions than men. Women prefer eye-contact during conversations to gauge the personality of the other party. On the other hand, men use facial expressions lesser than women.

Touching

Women use touching as a gesture of friendship or to show sympathy or to share their happiness. Men associate touching with sexual intensions. However, men who are heterosexual use less touching while talking to other men.

Conclusion

It is pertinent to say that the role of gender plays a crucial role in non-verbal communication. The gender differences creates the difference in the non-verbal communication as seen above. It is critical that a body language expert understand these criticalities in the analysis of non-verbal communication and gender differences.
