What is the purpose of PCR? Why is Taq polymerase used in PCR? Where does it come from?
What is the purpose of PCR?
PCR is used to make copies of DNA (amplification) from small volume.
Why is Taq polymerase used in PCR?
PCR involves high temperatures (90°C) to denature the double strand DNA. Normal DNA polymerases usually lose their activity (denature) at this temperature. That is why Taq polymerase is used in PCR. It can withstand up to 95°C.
Where does it come from?
Taq polymerase come from a thermophilic bacteria called Thermus aquaticus which usually lives in extreme temperatures.
