There are 5 major types of foodborne pathogens which are collectively also known as the Big 5. It includes Norovirus, Hepatitis A virus, Salmonella typhi, Shigella spp., and Escherichia coli (E. coli) or other Enterohemorrhagic or Shiga toxin-producing E. coli. The main causes of the illness are Campylobacteriosis, Cryptosporidiosis, Cyclosporiasis, Escherichia coli O157:H7 Infection, Giardiasis, Listeriosis, Norovirus Infection. Foodborne illness usually arises from improper handling, preparation, or food storage. Contamination of food is another main reason for the food illness. Good hygiene practices before, during, and after food preparation can reduce the chances of foodborne illness. It is also caused by pesticides or medicines in food and natural toxic substances such as poisonous mushrooms or reef fish.
