The most methodical way to go about this would be to use a test.
Specific tests such as cognitive tests, behavioral tests, etc. can
be made use of if we need an outside objective view to compare our
skills with the standards of the job position. We can make a
self-assessment questionnaire, which would be better served if we
involve a neutral third party, but can be done by ourselves. We
need to select questions that would make us think beyond the
conventional questions, and that would help us create better-self
perception which would eventually enable us to compare ourselves
better to the standards that have been set. We can gather feedback
from our colleagues and even our supervisors in order to also have
a few other variables to choose from. However, if we are not
currently employed, we can ask our previous employer to do the same
for us. Finally, the best way to compare our skills against the
competency standards of a position would require the use of a mock
scenario. Selecting the task that the position requires to perform
and conducting a mock experience where we try and visualize the
solution to the problem, based on the guidelines for the same can
help us have a clearer representation of where we stack up against
the requirements for the position and if we are able to accomplish
the necessary functions for the role.
