What is safety time with regard to project scheduling? Is safety time necessary for projects? What types of safety times are most appropriate?

Answer #1

Safety time:

Planning for uncertainty in the project is a major issue that any manager would face. Hence the approach for planning the project can be handled by inserting safety time. This is nothing but estimating the project duration by adding some degree of safety factor in it.

It is necessary to have safety time for the projects because any organization would make it accountable if they want to deal with their task estimates. It also holds good as there can be no reliable plan for a project if every estimate is the minimum time to perform a task. Even organizations who feel that their task estimates are super aggressive ensure that there are safety times embedded in it to account for uncertainty.

1) Two competing safety projects each cost the same amount. Project A reduces the likelihood of death for 1,000,000 people by 0.000001 (1/1,000,000) each, whereas project B reduces the likelihood of death for 1,000 people by 0.001 (1/1,000) each. If one and only one of these projects is to be undertaken (i.e., they are mutually exclusive and doing neither is not an option), which option should you do? Explain your answer.
