Normal saline is one of the most used solution for cleaning wounds as it is isotonic and harmless.

Wound cleaning procedure:

- wash hands and perform hand hygiene.

- assemble the equipments at the patient's bed side.

- explain the procedure to the patient in order to gain his cooperation and consent.

- provide a comfortable position to the patient.

- remove old dressing using sterile forceps.

- change gloves and wear new clean gloves.

- drape pads or towels around the wound to help absorb the irrigant solution.

- now irrigate or clean the wound with normal saline or any other prescribed cleansing solution using appropriate pressure from appropriate distance.

- pat dry the skin and perform the required debridement of the wound.

- cover open wound areas with sterile gauze pads and apply fresh dressing.

- make the patient comfortable and wash hands.
