ordered 1 liter of normal saline to infuse over 5 hours what rate would you set the IV pump round to the nearest whole number

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Given, ordered 1 litre of normal saline to infuse over 5 hours

Now, 1 litte = 1000 ml

Therefore,
Infusion rate (in ml/hr) =(volume of saline solution)/(total infusion time in hour
=1000 ml/5 hr
=200 ml/hr
So, Infusion rate (in ml/hr) of the IV pump will be 200 ml/hr.

Now, 1 hour =60 mins
5 hours=60×5 mins
=300 mins
Now,
Infusion rate (in ml/min) = (volume of saline solution in ml)/(infusion time in minutes)
=1000 ml/300min
=3.33 ml/min
=3 ml/min ( round to nearest whole number)
Therefore, infusion rate(in ml/min) of the IV pump should be 3 ml/min .Ans.
