Describe 4 functions of antibodies and how they protect the host from disease.
Answers:- Antibodies are special type of proteins called immunoglobulins and are part of immune system they perform several functions such as:
Opsonisation:- They bind to the antigens with their FAb region and direct phagocytes to the site of infection with their FC region.
Neutralisation:- They block binding sites of antigens and prevent their entry into host cell.
Agglutination:- They assemble particles together that enables phagocytosis more effectively and efficiently.
Cytotoxicity:- The antibodies also cause release of enzymes form other cells that kill invading pathogens.
Thus antibodies that are produced is a part adaptive immune system that defends organisms from foreign invasion like bacteria, viruses etc.
