describing your favorite learning theory (cognitive development,
behavioral, social cognitive, or information processing) and why it
is your favorite. 500 words
My favourite would be cognitive development theory.I love
Piaget's theory of development.Now, Piaget wasn’t completely
correct of course. He underestimated the abilities of babies and
pretty much ignored the cultural and environmental aspects of
development which Vygostsky stressed upon.
But Piaget laid some fundamentals that we cannot ignore and he
did not have the measurements we have now. He based his theory on
observations which do fit.
Development isn’t as stepwise as he thought it was, but it’s
not completely linear either. It’s continuous with some spurts in
it that coincide with some biological maturation. Experience also
plays a large role, and in real-world settings these experiences
cannot be gained until a certain age. For example, some experiences
come when a child can move around the world (crawling, walking).
But in the lab we have seen that if we help a child, for example
help it move around, it will gain this experience despite its
age.
So, his ideas were incomplete and he missed some things here
and there, but what he gave is still priceless. The stages he
proposed can be used to roughly determine what a child can or
cannot do at its age (and is used in many schools). By appending
some stuff the theory is very useful in practice, but shouldn’t be
seen as a perfect description of humans development, more like a
reflection of ability.
