Children having self esteem that is
not very positive, are to be handled very cautiously. Any wrong
move may contribute in lowering their self esteem and further
damaging their image of self. The strategies to improve self esteem
in at risk children are as follows:
- By telling them agin and again of
the things that they are best at. By a constant reminder of the
chores they are good at, it would divert them from the things that
they are not very capable at doing. As a result,, they would be
encouraged in polishing those skills more.
- Also, the caregiver or the teacher
has to make them practice those skills in a better manner. With the
positive reinforcement and motivation, if they practice the skills
that they are already doing well, they would start becoming better
at the.
- The children have to be taught to
never say that “I cannot” and replace it with “I can”. Once the
children start believing that they can do it, they would begin to
build their level of confidence and would perform their acts in a
better manner.
- This “I can” attitude, when
transferred to the things that have not been done before, can be
helpful. The child has to be reminded that even if they do not
succeed in a work, the best pleasure is when they are attempting it
with utmost sincerity and while be.ieving the fact that it could be
possible by them. In such a situation, even if they are not able to
be successful they would have the satisfaction of giving it their
best shot.
