Based on your reading, where do attitudes come from? How do attitudes change? Please be sure to be detailed in your response.
Attitudes are formed as a result of experiences and interactions with the outside world. Attitudes are inculcated in a manner similar to which learning of behaviours take place. With time, we develop a complex system of attitudes about various objects and phenomena that stem either from our personal engagement or from our observation of other individuals. A majoirty of our attitudes are formed during the earlier stages of our lives but do not remain fixed throughout.
An explanation offered in order to explain how attitude change may take place is referred to as the ‘Cognitive Dissonance’ theory by Leon Festinger. According to this model, human beings are motivated by a drive for consistency in thought and action. Thus, the presence of two or more interrelated yet incompatible cognitions would lead to an attitude change.
