Reactive oxygen species are chemically reactive species containing oxygen.

Eg : peroxides

Superoxides

ROS are formed as a natural byproduct of normal metabolism of oxygen and have important role in cell signaling and homeostasis.

During the level of environmental stress like UV rays and heat exposure the ros increase drastically known as oxidative stress.

Cell typically deal with this situation by doing apoptosis of cell is known as programmed cell death.
