Answer.
Attitudes, values and beliefs that support or excuse violence towards family members are strongly linked with family violence by a member. attitudes can be defined as mental views or dispositions which indicate opinions or affiliations. Most people believe that violence is not normal and is unacceptable but some people believe that violence can be excused especially in intimate relationships which are believed to be marked by ‘passionate’ expressions of even the most negative emotions and thoughts.
A related issue is of the collective traditional attitude towards gender roles in the family. While attitudes that support traditional views of gender-roles in the family do not directly lead to violence, these attitudes influence the family memebrs’ willingness to excuse violence within families, which reduce the chances of take action against the act of violence in relationships.
Lastly, the bystander attitude of approaching domestic violence with apprehensions is marked by s tension between the belief that it is the community’s responsibility to help change violent behaviour in family where they suspect that violence is a problem. For instances, within the US society which is markedly by a high level of individualism, people are largely influenced by the belief in domestic privacy that what happens in the household is a private issue.
People see the campaigns about family violence in their communities and feel that the involvement of constructive media campaigns, practising vigilance in the neighbourhood, etc have a great relevance in the present context where the boundaries between passion and aggression often collude leading to an ever increasing discourse of aggression as natural.
