Describe the purpose of distillation (or fractional distillation) in the refining of crude oil.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Crude oil is the mixture of different hydrocarbons which are basic raw materials and source of energy in our life. It is the main cause root of the change in the economic growth of any country in the race of globalization and modernizations. The components of crude oil are separated by fractional distillation due to difference in their boiling points like petrol, diesel, furnace oil, parrafin wax, gaseous or volatile products, fuel oil, bitumen, kerosine, lubricant oil etc. So fractional distillation is used to separate these components of crude oil.

I performed a lab experiment for Simple & Fractional Distillation. For simple distillation I got 21.7% of methanol and 78.3% of water. For fractional distillation I got 16.7% of methanol and 83.3% of water. My question is: Did fractional distillation show better separation than simple distillation? Yes or no? I confused in numbers.

You are the manager of a large crude-oil refinery. As part of the refining process, a certain heat exchanger (operated at high temperatures and with abrasive material flowing through it) must be replaced every year. The replacement and downtime cost in the first year is $160,000. This cost is expected to increase due to inflation at a rate of 6% per year for six years (i.e. until the EOY 7), at which time this particular heat exchanger will no longer...
