I performed a lab experiment for Simple & Fractional Distillation.
For simple distillation I got 21.7% of methanol and 78.3% of water.
For fractional distillation I got 16.7% of methanol and 83.3% of water.

My question is: Did fractional distillation show better separation than simple distillation? Yes or no?
I confused in numbers.

Answer #1

Distillation is the separation technique used for the purification of liquid or mixture of liquids.Distillation include two processes, they are boiling and condensation.

The important difference between simple distillation and fractional distillation is separation of different components with boiling point gaps of atleast 50degrees is required but fractional distillation separates the components having closer boiling points.

Fractional distillation is used in crude oil refining and involve several steps and special apparatus for the purification.

In my distillation experiment for organic chemistry lab, they had us find the average drop size (mL/drop) by taking our total volume collected and diving it by how many drops we observed. Now, in my lab report, I have to explain my data for this and its significance. I got 0.019 mL/drop for simple distillation and 0.01 mL/drop for fractional. What is the significance of this data?

The question is taken from Organic Chemistry lab assigment, Simple and Fractional Distillation. There are no tables, plots, or diagrams; just a quesiton. "Flooding" the packed column during fractional distillation reduces the ability to separate two liquids with similar boiling points. How would a visible liquid phase in the colimn reduce its efficiency?

I have completed a column chromatography lab and need to write a discussion. We performed a TLC at the end to check our separation. Unfortunately, I did not do a good job separating ferrocene and acetyl ferrocene (with hexane, TBME, then acetone) and could not see any of the spots on the developed TLC. Why can't I see the spots at all? They disappeared. How do I explain what the TLC experiment shows about the effectiveness of my separation?

I have to perform an experiment in organic chemistry lab. My reaction is 2-pentanol. + NaBr + H2SO4.Starting material (2- pentanol) given was 12gram. I performed two trials but i didnot got ressult i performed 2 trials in which i didn't got any result. In first trial add 3 gm NaBr, 7 ml H2SO4 and 3.06gm 2- pentanol. I reflux for 30 min. After reflux i vaccum filterate the product and seperate NaBr then in seperatory funnel i wash the...

I recently did an experiment where I mixed 2.11 ml of water, 2.01 ml of ethyl acetate and 0.059 g of vanillyn alcohol. When I did the theoretical mass calculation I got 0.0335g, but when I did the experiment and evaporated off the organic layer, I got 0.044g of product. Could someone please explain why I would have gotten more than what my theoretical mass would be? Could this have occurred from evaporating it too long or maybe during extraction,...

I had to do a lab for the first two I got delta H ( do they seem right) but my main question is how do i know if the numbers are possible or negative (for 421.42 and 133.49) Mg(s) + 2H+(aq)      -->     Mg2+(aq) + H2(g) 421.42 Mg2+(aq) + H2O (l)    -->   MgO(s) + 2H+ (aq) 133.49 ½ O2(g) + H2(g)   -->         H2O(l) -285.5 kJ/mol (given this) Mg(s) + ½ O2(g)   -->    MgO(s)

Hi, organic chemistry folks! Can someone edit my short paragraph about my experiment on simple distillation of an unknown organic liquid. It needs to be concise, clear, intepreted, and contain relevant values. Hopefully, I did those but I'm just having trouble wording it all together. Thanks! The purpose of this laboratory experiment was to purify and identify a volatile organic liquid of unknown #3 by performing a simple distillation technique. The purified unknown #3 was characterized via BP and IR....
