what are the results what do you by performing a fractional distillation lab?

Answer #1

In fractional distillation lab the compounds are seperated according to their boiling point, the compound having less boiling point is come first from distillation than compound having higher boiling point.

Generally the component having boiling points that differ by less than 25 °C from each other under a pressure of one atmosphere.

Example:

To separate these two non polar liquids, distillation is practical, fast and effective.Cyclohexane has the lower boiling point (80.74oC) and is more volatile. Boiling point of Toluene is 110.6oC. Toluene does not boil at the same temperature asCyclohexane, so Cyclohexane will boils out of the mixture first.

I performed a lab experiment for Simple & Fractional Distillation. For simple distillation I got 21.7% of methanol and 78.3% of water. For fractional distillation I got 16.7% of methanol and 83.3% of water. My question is: Did fractional distillation show better separation than simple distillation? Yes or no? I confused in numbers.

During last week’s lab of distillation, many of you had difficulties getting the fractional distillation column to work properly. Specifically, the liquid started condensing at the top of the fractional column and the vapor did not distill over. The lab instructor suggested that changing the bead size (which was in the column) to a larger size might improve the outcome of the experiment. Is this suggestion valid? Would it help the process or is this suggestion wrong? Explain your answer

The question is taken from Organic Chemistry lab assigment, Simple and Fractional Distillation. There are no tables, plots, or diagrams; just a quesiton. Any sources of error will happen in the lab of fractional distillation and elimination reaction? I do not have much information to provide with. In this lab, 2-methyl-2-butanol reacted with H2SO4 and 2-chloro-2-methylbutane reacted with KOH (1-propanol). Please explain the sources of error and way to improve.
