Explain why flooding the fractionating column will lead to a poor seperation in a fractional distillation? Experiment 2: Distillation

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Fractional distillation is a process in which mixtures of different liquids can be separated based on their boiling point. In this process fractionating column is an essential item. It helps to separate the liquid mixtures by cooling the vapours, condense and vaporize again. Therefore there must be present some optimal amount of liquid in the column for the greatest separation of components, smaller or larger volume of liquid in the column means less than optimal separation which leads to poor separations. If the column is flooded then the mixtures will not get enough time to evaporate, before completion of separation of one component the other component will enter to that separated liquid, making again mixtures of liquid.

During last week’s lab of distillation, many of you had difficulties getting the fractional distillation column to work properly. Specifically, the liquid started condensing at the top of the fractional column and the vapor did not distill over. The lab instructor suggested that changing the bead size (which was in the column) to a larger size might improve the outcome of the experiment. Is this suggestion valid? Would it help the process or is this suggestion wrong? Explain your answer

The question is taken from Organic Chemistry lab assigment, Simple and Fractional Distillation. There are no tables, plots, or diagrams; just a quesiton. "Flooding" the packed column during fractional distillation reduces the ability to separate two liquids with similar boiling points. How would a visible liquid phase in the colimn reduce its efficiency?

Jack Slapdash was responsible for preparing the mixture for fractional distillation. He noticed after the distillation was complete that there was both 2-pentanone and 3-pentanone in the hood and he is not sure which one he actually used. After the distillation was complete he took a carbon nmr spectrum of his pot residue (pentanone) and noticed that there were only three signals after the solvent and reference signals were identified. Did Jack use 2-pentanone or 3-pentanone for his experiment? Explain...
