What is the Purpose of the Synthesis and Fractional Distillation of 3-MethylButyl Acetate?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

3-MethylButyl Acetate i.e. Isoamyl acetate, also known as isopentyl acetate, is an organic compound that is the ester formed from isoamyl alcohol and acetic acid.

Isoamyl acetate is used to confer banana flavor in foods. Pear oil commonly refers to a solution of isoamyl acetate in ethanol that is used as an artificial flavor.

It is also used as a solvent for some varnishes and nitrocellulose lacquers, as well as being a honey bee pheromone and can be used to attract large groups of honeybees to a small area. Because of its intense, pleasant odor and its low toxicity, isoamyl acetate is used to test the effectiveness of respirators or gas masks.

Fractional distillation is purification/ separation technique of organic liquids used for purification of 3-MethylButyl Acetate

I performed a lab experiment for Simple & Fractional Distillation. For simple distillation I got 21.7% of methanol and 78.3% of water. For fractional distillation I got 16.7% of methanol and 83.3% of water. My question is: Did fractional distillation show better separation than simple distillation? Yes or no? I confused in numbers.
