Describe the success of oxidation of borneol to camphor. Be specific!!! Use the melting point, IR and 1H NMR to support the reflection.
By checking the melting point of the product ; you can judge whether the oxidation is successful or not.
The melting point of borneol is: 208 C
The melting point of camphor is: 175 C
The best way to judge the sucess of the reaction is to analyse the spectroscopic data.
Infrared spectroscopy (IR) : The starting material is borneol that contains -OH group and it gives a broad signal at 3600 cm-1.
The product loses -OH group which is converted to carbonyl. So the IR spectra of the product does not contain any peak at 3600 cm-1. Rather you will get a new sharp peak for carbonyl streching at around 1750 cm-1.
1H NMR:
Borneol contains 18 Hs and you will get 18 Hs in the 1H NMR. The -OH peak appears as a broad signal due to H -bonding.
Camphor has 16Hs in its 1H NMR and the -OH peak ( broad signal) disappears.
