In organic preparation, for the isolation of an organic liquid from solution which decomposes at the boiling point of the solution the technique used is steam distillation.

The process of steam distillation is used to separate the substances of a mixture through evaporation, which then involves condensing the vapor back into liquid. It is based on the fact that different elements or compounds have different boiling points and one of them is steam volatile and immiscible in water.

It is commonly used in industries to separate the naturally occuring organic compounds from plants.

Various industries use this method in the extraction of oil, perfumes...etc
