Describe the classes of repetitive elements that are present in the human genome. (Min 2 and a half pages)
In human genome 98.5% genome is non coding and contain repetitive sequence .
In humans repetitive sequence are present as a result RNA splicing occur in eukaryotes to remove the non coding sequence but in prokaryotes there is no splicing mechanism because they do not contain repetitive sequence they contain only non repetitive sequence.
High repetitive sequence are present in large clusters . Minisatellite and microsatellite are the tandemly repeated sequence . Minisatellite are 9-64 bp in size are present close to the telomere. Microsatellite are 2-13 bp in size and are dispersed throughout the chromosome.these sequence are also used as a DNA marker in many process .
Transposable elements are moderately repeated sequence. Transposon have the ability to move from place to another in the genome. It is also known as selfish DNA because it does not provide any benefit to the host .
