What is the gene expression and the environment?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Environment has huge effects on the expression of genes. Many factors including hormones, light, temperatures, drugs administered, metabolism, external environment in which the organism or humans survive. Below are some of the instances for the above factors.

Administered drugs has effects in infants. Application of oxygen causes blindness in pre mature infants. Also it is observed that increased level of oxygen leads to normal rhythm of breathing pattern. Hormones such as testosterone and di hydro testosterone causes baldness in males. External factor such as temperatures affects gene expression, Himalayan rabbits require C gene for the pigmentation of skin, fur, eyes. Expression of C gene is regulated by temperature and is inactive at above 35 degrees and is active between 15 to 25 degrees.

Predict what will happen to the expression of β-galactosidase (lacZ gene) in a mutant strain lacking lacY-gene. Remember cells are not able to produce LacY-protein and can not transport lactose: lacZ gene will be expressed only when both lactose and glucose are present. lacZ gene will not be expressed. lacZ gene will be expressed only in the presence of lactose; maximum expression will be observed in the absence of glucose. lacZ gene will not be repressed; maximum expression will be...
