3. Auxin is an important plant hormone that regulates gene expression in response to stimuli. What type of molecule is auxin and how does it regulate gene expression?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Auxin is a plant growth hormone produced by the plants. They play a crucial role in carrying
out many plant processes. They have a wide variety of functions.
They promote cell growth, phototropism and also aid in supressing lateral growth.

The effect of auxin is mediated by auxin response factors(ARFs). These ARF proteins are
repressed by Aux/IAA proteins by sequestration in the cytoplasm. When auxin is present,
SCF complex is activated and it degrades Aux/IAA proteins there by relieving ARF proteins
from repression. Now ARF proteins are free to translocate into the nuclues and exert
their effects on gene expression.

TRANSPORT INHIBITOR RESPONSE (TIR) proteins, AUXIN/INDOLE-3-ACETIC ACID (Aux/IAA) proteins, and AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR (ARF) proteins all play key roles in regulating the expression of AUXIN RESPONSE GENE (ARG) genes that harbour AUXIN RESPONSE ELEMENTS (AREs) in their promoter sequences in response to auxin. Describe the functional role of TIRs, Aux/IAAs and ARFs in regulating the expression of ARG genes that harbour AREs in their promoters in response to auxin expression.

Part 1: Click on the box that says “Expression.” You are presented with a gene that contains a regulatory region and a transcribed region. Your goal is to produce 3 proteins from each of three genes. The proteins are indicated by the shapes in the box at the top right. You need to successfully transcribe each gene, and then translate the message from the gene into a protein using your knowledge of how these processes work. GENE 1 Questions What...
