what are the effects of a dna mutation on gene expression

what are the effects of a dna mutation on gene expression

Homework Answers

Answer #1
  • Due to the mutation in DNA, Sequence of nucleotide can be altered because of transitions or transversions or deletion or addition of nucleotides. Due to the mutation, it can produce stop codon in between gene and further causes the premature chain termination and hence non functional proteins are produced. When the number of nucleotides added or removed is not equal to three, causes a frameshift mutation. Point Mutations may also occur in non-coding regions - introns or regulatory regions, severity of the mutation depends upon the region it occurs in, mutations in introns have little or no effect. Mutation in the gene can also produce different phenotypes. Because mutations can interrupt cellular processes, mutants often hold the key to understanding gene function.

Your friend is studying the effects of a mutation in the ORF of a gene. The mutation, which changes an A to a T occurs toward the center of the gene. Your friend scans the corresponding region of the mRNA and finds it results in 5’…GGGCTAUACUAUCCGCGA…3’ becoming 5’…GGGCTAUACUAACCGCGA…3’ with the changed base underlined. He hypothesizes that UAU encoding for Tyr is replaced by UAA encoding STOP due to this mutation. Disappointed, he finds that the mutant protein is the same...

A transcription factor “T” is a critical regulator of the expression of the gene “G”. “T” works as a dimer and normally resides in the cytoplasm until the small protein signal molecule “P” is bound to it. When “P” is bound to “T” the transcription factor is moved to the nucleus and can regulate the expression of the gene “G”. Explain what would be the expression of the gene “G” if: A) There is a mutation in “T” that removes...
