Why does male individual have greater RBC than female ?
Erythropoietin stimulates the bone marrow and helps in production of RBC from the bone marrow and this process is known as erythropoiesis.
The females secrets estrogen as sex hormone while the males secret androgen as sex hormone in more quantity, so as to develop secondary sexual characters in them.
But, the estrogen has an inhibitory effect on the kidney for the production of erythropoietin, while the androgen hormone of male have an enhancing effect on kidney for the production of erythropoietin. Hence, due to enhancing effect of androgen, more erythropoietin is produced in the males which inturns results in more erythropoiesis in the bone marrow. So the females have less number of RBC than the males.
