Among mammalian species, male fitness is typically more variable than female fitness. Explain why this is often the case. What implications does this have for evolution acting on males and females?

Answer #1

Among mammals, male fitness is typically more variable than female fitness. It is because males have more competition among themselves to grab more opportunities for mating. As such the males which are physically more fit, robust and long life span have more advantages of fertilizing more females. Thus the result is, such males will have more offsprings through different females. As per Bateman, such males will be selected by nature. Whereas females can't mate with more males at the same time and therefore do not exhibit much variation in fitness. The fitness variability in males results in evolution favoring such males which reproduce more on account of their more fitness.

Some fish are paternal mouth-brooders, meaning that a male protects his young by allowing them to shelter inside his mouth. This care starts at the fertilized egg stage, and in some species continues for a while even after the offspring become free-swimming. Males in these species either stop or severely reduce feeding during the mouth-brooding period, and typically lose weight. Often, females can produce more eggs than a single male can successfully brood (meaning that a female could potentially have...

discusse, the males of some species have ornaments or characteristics that lower fitness in some ways, but are attractive to females. For example, some birds have showy tails that make them more vulnerable to predators, but they increase their reproductive success. Which hypothesis do you find most plausible about why females might prefer such handicaps? Why do you favor this hypothesis? (This hypothesis could be one that we discussed in class, or it could be another one that you can...

You wish to test the hypothesis that female college students spend more on wearing apparel than male college students. Which of the following is INCORRECT? The null and alternate hypotheses are: Ho : mF < = mM HA : mF > mM If you concluded that female students spend more than male students when in fact there is no difference between the two groups, you would be committing a Type II error. If we conclude that females spend less than...

Take your survey data and code the gender question as Male= 0 and Female = 1. Suppose we hypothesize that women are more likely to respond to surveys than men are. Specifically, we believe that more than 55 percent of all respondents are women which equates to the proportion of the gender variable to be greater than 0.55. Test the hypothesis. Females= 24 Males= 9 Provide the 6 step process of testing the hypothesis. Present your results and discuss why...
