Describe the anatomical difference between an adult larynx vs a child larynx.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

The difference between an adult larynx and a child laynnx lies in its size. The child larynx is smaller in size than the adult larynx.

The vocal fold mucosa of child larynx is thinner as compared to the adult larynx. The layered structure of the vocal fold is not differentiated in child laynx, whereas there is a clear differentiation between superficial, intermediate and deep layers in an adult larynx.

The child larynx is at the level of first or second cervical vertebrae, whereas the adult larynx is at the level of fourth or fifth cervical vertebrae.

The hyoid bone in child larynx assumes a much lower anatomical position and actually overlaps the thyroid cartilage. The child larynx contains no vertical prominence in the thyroid cartilage.
