How do you determine if a data set is normally distributed? What is the z score and how is that related to the distribution? This is for CJA/335 Research Statistics.
When the data is entered in a histogram, it can easily give a picture whether the distribution is normal distribution or not. This is because a normal distribution can be easily superimposed over such a histogram. A normal distribution appears as a bell shaped curve. The skewness and level of distortion in the data can also help determine this. This is so because when the graph is clustered towards one side, it is a skewed one as opposed to a symmetrical/normal distribution.
The z score is a standard score which helps to determine the probability of occurring within a normal distribution. Also it helps a researcher to compare the data/scores of two normal distributions. The standard normal distribution tends to convert the group data in the frequency distribution such that the mean is 0 and the standard deviation is 1.
