What do you predict would happen if the foramen ovale and/or ductus arteriosus did not completely close after birth?
During fetal life the heart is collapsed, the nutrients and oxygen in the fetus come from mother's blood through placenta. Foreman ovale is a hole in the atrial septum during fetal life which allows the blood to skip lungs and thus blood directly go to the aorta. Although some blood enters to the right ventricle and enters to the pulmonary artery. Ductus arteriosus is an attachment between pulmonary artery and aorta which transfer blood from pulmonary artery to the aorta.
After birth, if closing will not occur this will lead to mixing of pure and impure blood which may lead to severe complications.
