Neurons pass their signals to other neurons through a junction called synapses. It also passes a signal to muscle cells and gland cells. These all signals are chemical in nature rely on mainly chemical synapses.

Pre-synaptic neurons release chemical neurotransmitters on synapses that act as target neurons. Glutamate is used mainly as an excitatory neurotransmitter. The overstimulation of glutamate at Pre-synaptic cell cause stress. It is called glutamate-glutamine cycle in which glutamate is synthesized .

Due to dysfunction of glutamate-glutamine cycle, neurons become overstimulated. It causes neuronal cell death also knows as apoptosis.
