Do you think life would even be possible without enzymes?  What do you think would happen to you if something interfered with your enzymes?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Enzymes are the biological catalysts of our body. Though they are considered to increase the rate of reaction of mant biochemical reactions of the body , but in real many reactions will not even consider to occur in their absence.

So these enzymes play a very crucial role in almost all the metabolic reactions occuring in our body , and one can simply not imagine life in their absence.

If something interfered with the enzymes , there enzymatic capability is lost. These enzymes are very specific in nature. They have specific substrates whom they bound to and convert them into products. So if anything that messes up with the configuration or structure of enzyme ultimately leads to a total shutdown of the reaction mechanism.

The Krebs cycle is a circle. What do you think would happen if you removed one of the compounds from that circle to make an amino acid (this does happen, Alpha-ketogluterate is the basic building block for many amino acids)? The cell has a variety of other pathways that can make oxaloacetate (the final 4 carbon product in the krebs cycle) from other molecules in the cell. Why might these alternative pathways be important?
