Private speech is essential for self-guiding, self-communication, and self-direction. It helps us to motivate ourselves while we complete a task. It is most prominently seen in children, but as adults, we can see that private speech has many of the same benefits, if not more. Adults use private speech to help regulate their emotions where they are seen expressing their feelings. Private speech also acts as an aid to our problem solving skills as we speak out the options and talk our way through the problem. It is also essential to enhance our memory and creative skills. Private speech in an integral part of our cognitive ability where we are better able to organize and understand information when it is spoken out coherently rather than jumbled up in the mind.
