The potential problem with the DSM 5 categories of potential problems is the fact that; before any treatment, the clinician has to give the client a classification of the existing psychiatric problems and the client generally attributes more meaning to it than appropriate, thereby fostering the risk of reification.

Apart from this DSM5 classification is discrete while mental illnesses exist as a spectrum. The changes suggested to the APA involve considering the mental illnesses in the spectrum and not as just discrete so that it represents the actual picture.
