Coping is the process of spending mental, focussed energy towards dealing with problems in life. Coping mechanisms can be classified into three broad types: appraisal-focused, which affects thought associated with the agent that causes stress to the individual. Problem-focused, which affect the person having stress directly & emotion-focused, which affects the feelings of the person having stress. Coping skills can be either positive or negative. Positive or adaptive strategies decrease the amount of stress experienced while negative strategies reduces the symptoms of stress without addressing the actual problem. All coping strategies having the main concern of reducing the intensity of stress but some strategies can be unhealthy or merely ineffective. Taking precaution is advisable while choosing any method to reduce stress in life. Stress can seriously affect our health & our efficiency in work. Through the right tools & techniques it is possible to manage stress. A person is said to have in stress if he believe that he doesn't have time, resources or knowledge to handle a situation. This also implies that different people handles the stress differently. However some common signs of stress are- frequent headaches, cold or sweaty hands and feet, frequent stomach pain or nausea, panic attacks, social withdrawal or isolation,compulsive behaviour, constant fatigue etc. Managing stress through different methods: 1. Action oriented approach- keeping a dairy to identify the causes of short term or frequent stress & try to root out the actual reason of occurance. Sometimes workload can cause stress if we unable to manage time properly. Take action to minimize stress in the work place if it is uncomfortable or unpleasant. 2.Emotion-oriented approach- Making habit of positive thinking & using positive affirmation can effectively reduce stress.3. Acceptance-oriented approaches - It applies to situations where the individual having no power to change the situation what is happening. Using of techniques like meditation & physical relaxation is very useful means to tackle odd situations.
