Describe a recent situation where you had to work in a team with someone who failed to deliver on his /her part of the assignment.
Outline the context.
We were four in the team for a team project. I was leading the team and other three friends were in-charge for different areas of the project. We had only ten days to complete the project and everyone was working hard to make the project come true as it involved collecting more information on the project, collecting equipments for the project and meeting people for data collection. We all were working hard sacrificing our sleep, entertainments and family time except one of my friends. He kept missing out on the target days and didn’t attend our gatherings for consolidation.
What actions did you take to encourage your colleague to contribute?
We three were very disappointed with him and my other two friends suggested to exclude him from the project because his actions discouraged others too. But as the team leader, I just took him out for dinner and explained how hard, we were all working hard sacrificing everything. I showed him the progress of the task and showed his part that was missing from the overall picture. I explained him how important this project for all of us and requested him not to put down his friends. I also told him that without this project, we won’t be able to complete our programme.
How did you handle his/her reaction?
My friend was in denial first but later understood that his behavior shouldn’t affect other people in the project. He reacted negligently but next day when he met me, he told that he felt really sorry for his behavior and requested everyone to forgive him. I told it was ok but suggested that he should speed up the tasks and told him that I would help him.
What did you learn from this experience that will help you in future team activities?
I learnt that people can change their behavior at any point of time, so the only thing needed is that we should talk to them with respect. We should always strive to win people and not lose them from the programme.
