What was Renaissance humanism and how did it affect thinking about education then and even now?
Humanism an intellectual movement of the Renaissance began in late-14th-century Italy, according to the majority of scholars, came to maturity in the 15th century, and after the middle of that century spread to the rest of Europe. The medieval scholastic conventions in education at the time emphasized practical, pre-professional, and scientific studies engaged in solely for job preparation, and typically by men alone and Humanism was developed in response to this movement. The humanist approach is against the utilitarian approach to education, it sought to create a citizenry who could speak and write with eloquence and thus engage in the civic life of their communities. Humanism is applicable even now as we should try to create people who engage in civic lives leading to the growth of a nation rather than just engaged in earning their daily bread and butter.
