Pathogenesis

The main virus that causes orchitis is mumps virus. The infection leads to entry of virus or bacteria into the testis by crossing the blood testis barrier. It will then cause the subsequent inflammatory reaction that leads to the release of inflammatory mediators like interleukin, prostaglandins, thromboxane that will initiate the inflammatory response. The recruitment of neutrophil, lymphocytes occurs. The conversation of lymphocyte into plasma cell leads to antibody production. The inflammatory process leads to edema, swelling that occurs due to increased vascular permeability. All these events leads to clinical features like pain, swelling and redness of testis
