Which of these methods (inductive or deductive reasoning) would be better for hypothesis generating vs hypothesis-driven research approaches?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

In inductive reasoning, one makes conclusions from a given set of data. In inductive reasoning, observations are made from a data, patterns are dissected and then generalizations are made in order to explain a theory. Thus, inductive reasoning goes from specific to general. Inductive reasoning makes wider generalizations from observations. In inductive reasoning, hypothesis is made with the limited amount of information in order to investigate a particular topic. Thus inductive reasoning Is used in hypothesis generation.

In deductive reasoning, predictions are made about the consequences of a theory. Predictions are made about what the observations would be if the specific theory in questions is correct. Deductive reasoning goes from general to specific. In hypothesis driven research, the hypothesis is made and then it is tested using deductive reasoning.
