2 ways in which the incontinence effects the elderly :

1) PHYSICAL EFFECTS :

  • Skin infections : Frequent exposure of skin to urine leads to development of incontinence dermatitis , itching , pressure ulcers, bacterial and fungal infections
  • Increased risk of fall and injuries : People with incontinence are more prone to falls and injuries because they will always be in a hurry to restroom and they won't notice the potential risks that lie in their way to the restroom
  • Sedentary lifestyle : They stop doing physical activity in fear of incontinence, which can lead to chronic diseases like hypertension , coronary heart disease etc

2) PSYCHOSOCIAL EFFECT :

  • It has a negative effect on quality of life
  • They have emotional burden of shame leading to depression , anxiety, social isolation , loss of interest , frustration and embarassment
  • It effects the sexual relationship with the partner, due to the fear of incontinence during the episode of sex
