Why is it important for a nurse to advocate for a client even if it means challenging another member of the interprofessional team?

The nurses as healthcare provider have not only professional but ethical, moral and social responsibilities towards patents to manage care care for patients physical needs, diseases/ illness and treat for health related conditions. Nurses do closely monitor and observe all the relevant information to aid and assist to critical care and treatment information. Hence, it is important and for a nurse to advocate for a client/ patient in order to help with safety and care of the patient as it is one of the fundamental tents of the medical and nursing profession. The following are the reasons hat a nurse would advocate for a client even if it means challenging another member of the

interprofessional team:

1. Nursing code of ethics: The nurses are bound by the ethical code and considerations n terms of taking patient care, providing treatment in ethical terms even if means that a member of the interprofessional team has treated or carried out any unethical activity, it is the moral responsibility and hence important for a nurse to advocate for a client to preserve the morality and safety of the institution and nursing profession

2.Healthcare equality for the client: If a client is deliberately kept away from normal treatment or being discriminated in any way, it become the care-taker;s or nurses responsibility to remedy the situation and bring equality of treatment and care for the client

3. To reduce or alleviate pain and suffering: Nurses are required o closely monitor and assess patients for discomfort and if it involves negligence or medical errors by the member of the interprofessional team, it is duty of the nurse to advocate for the client so that such incidences do not repeat

4. To promote and preserve human dignity: To preserve human dignity is to respect and abide by individual client/ patient's autonomy and respect privacy. If the autonomy and privacy is violated in any manner, it should be brought to light and advocated by the nurses.

5. To help bring notice a serious issue: If the member of interprofessional team makes a serious medical error which has direct impact on the health outcome or treatment of the client, the the nurse should help with advocating with patient's rights and safety.
