Double beam instrument is the instrument where two beams are formed in space by a U shaped mirror known as beam splitter.

Double Beam in Time

Here, the beam appears at two places over one cycle in time. Light is actually split in time by sector mirror and directed both towards reference cell and also the sample cell one after the other. The detector subtacts the blank from the sample.

Double Beam in Space

Here light is actually split by a V shaped mirror and directed towards bothe reference cell and the sample cell at the same time. Here two detectors are used that gets to subtact the blank from the sample.
