According to researches the portrayal of African Americans in crime coverage on network news is more than that of whites. The media reinforces racism, by promoting negative stereotypes. This is happening due to according to Ziegler and White’s (1990) findings on racism in the use of sources on network news that nearly 90% of network news reporters were found to be White. Further, whites have been reported to be overrepresented while African Americans were underrepresented as victims of violent crime. Furthermore, as police officers, Whites were overrepresented and African Americans were underrepresented.
