NMR Spectroscopy

how many peaks will the methyl group be split into and how many peaks will the methylene group with the OH functional group be split into?

Homework Answers

Answer #1

Methyl group with OH funtional group ( e.g. Methanol) will show a singlet in NMR spectrum that means it will not be splitted as all the hydrogens are in a similar chemical environment.

On the other hand methylene group with OH funtional group ( e.g. ethanol) will show a quartate in NMR spectrum that means it will splitted into four lines. Two methylene hydrogens are having three neighbouring hydrogen atoms of methyl group. This is calculated from the n+1 rule which says that  an environment with n neighbours will be split into n+1 multiplets.

structure of methanol: CH3-OH

structure of methanol: CH3-CH2-OH

Before the advent of modern spectroscopic techniques, such as NMR and IR spectroscopy, chemists typically determined whether a functional group was transformed into another during a reaction by performing chemical tests, where the reagents would react with the new functional group but not the old one (or vice versa) causing an observable reaction to occur, such as gas bubbles or a solid precipitate. Find a chemical test that you could have used to determine whether or not the nitro group...
