Organic Chemistry

a) Describe how you could use IR spectroscopy to distinguish between ethyl acetate and butyric acid.

b) Describe how you could use NMR spectroscopy to distinguish between benzoyl chloride and para-chlorobenzaldehyde.

Homework Answers

Answer #1

a) ethyl acetate carbonyl C = O give streching frequncy at 1730 - 1750 cm-1  and

butryic acid carbonyl C = O give streching frequncy at 1700 - 1725 cm-1

as well as butyric acid give very broad spectrum for - COO - H (-O - H) at 2500 - 3600 cm-1

by taking in considaration above frequency we can distinguish between ethyl acetate and butyric acid.

b) para-chlorobenzaldehyde give chimical shift at 9.5 - 10.5 for aldehydic proton but benzoyl chloride does not give this shift and we can distinguish between benzoyl chloride and para-chlorobenzaldehyde.
