The breakdown of glucose occurs when oxygen-using normal cellular respiration is not possible. The fermentation is the process by which some bacteria get their oxygen to produce the usually energy. This process is usually performed by the anaerobic bacteria. There are also certain bacteria that do not perform fermentation for the oxygen requirement. Aerotolerant anaerobes and obligate anaerobes are the major bacteria that do not perform fermentation for the oxygen requirement.

Aerotolerant anaerobes: these anaerobes perform the fermentation to produce ATP (adenosine tri phosphate). These anaerobes do not utilize the oxygen, but they protect themselves from the reactive oxygen molecules. These organisms do not use the oxygen for growth, but they can tolerate the presence.
