What is the role of the glucocorticoids (E.G. Cortisol) and the mineralocorticoids (E.G. Aldosterone)?
Ans) Glucocorticoids are a part of the feedback mechanism in the immune system, which reduces certain aspects of immune function such as inflammation. They also help the body to respond against stress and environmental change. Cortisol facilitates the movement of immune cells from bloodstream and storage organs such as spleen, into tissue where they are needed to defend against pathogens.
Mineralocorticoids play a major role in regulating the balance of electrolytes and water, especially in the kidneys, where they facilitate reabsorption of sodium ions and water from urine. Mineralocorticoids such as Aldosterone, promote sodium reabsorption in transporting epithelia of the kidneys, salivary glands and large intestine. Circulating Aldosterone concentrations rise in response to low blood volume or sodium depletion under control of the renin-angiotensin system (RAS).
